How This Calculator Works

This calculator uses published pricing and bulk billing policies from 12 Australian telehealth providers. Select your service type (medical certificates, GP consultations, prescriptions, specialist referrals, mental health plans, or after-hours care), your patient category, and your preferred consultation mode. The calculator cross-references these against each provider's eligibility rules to estimate your out-of-pocket cost.

Results are sorted by estimated cost, with bulk billed ($0) options shown first. Providers that do not offer your selected service or consultation mode are automatically excluded from results.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my data stored or shared?

No. This calculator runs entirely in your browser. No personal information is collected, stored, or sent to any server. Your selections are not tracked.

How accurate are the cost estimates?

Estimates are based on published pricing and bulk billing policies verified as of February 2026. Actual costs may vary based on appointment length, time of day, and provider-specific policies. Always confirm pricing directly with your chosen provider before booking.

What services can I compare?

You can compare costs for seven service types: single-day medical certificates, multi-day medical certificates (2 to 7 days), GP consultations, prescriptions, specialist referrals, mental health plans, and after-hours consultations. Not all providers offer every service.

Does private health insurance cover telehealth?

In Australia, Medicare covers GP telehealth consultations, not private health insurance. Your PHI hospital or extras cover may partially cover allied health or psychology telehealth sessions. For standard GP telehealth, the calculator results are based on Medicare eligibility only. The calculator includes a private health insurance toggle so you can see relevant information about how PHI applies to telehealth.

What if I do not have a Medicare card?

If you select "No Medicare Card" as your patient category, the calculator shows providers that accept patients without Medicare. You will need to pay the full consultation fee. Some providers, such as MiDoc, do not require a Medicare card at all and are highlighted with a "No Medicare Required" badge.

What is bulk billing?

Bulk billing means the telehealth provider bills Medicare directly for your consultation and you pay nothing. The provider accepts the Medicare rebate as full payment. Read our complete guide to bulk billing telehealth for more details.

What are MBS items?

MBS items are codes in the Medicare Benefits Schedule that determine the rebate amount for medical services. Different consultation types and durations have different MBS items and rebate amounts. For telehealth, the most common item is MBS 91800 for standard GP video consultations.

What does "Text / Async" mean?

Some telehealth providers offer asynchronous consultations where you fill out an online form describing your symptoms or request. A doctor reviews your submission and responds without a live call. This is common for medical certificates and prescriptions and is often faster and cheaper than video or phone consultations.
